Nevertheless

I was standing in the darkness

With the desert wind around

When the Spirit came beside me

Without making any sound

And He asked me like a father

Who can see beyond the end

Do you know the condescension

I said, No… not yet

I said, I have seen His mercies

And I’ve watched His hand before

But there’s still a thousand meanings

I don’t understand at all

Nevertheless

I know He loves His children

Nevertheless

I know Heaven’s looking down

And though I cannot see

What every sorrow means

I have heard His voice enough

To trust the things unseen

Then He showed me fields and cities

Kings and beggars, war and peace

Every kind of human hunger

Every wound that would not cease

And I felt how small I really was

Like a grain against the sea

As the visions kept unfolding

Far beyond what I could read

Then He asked again in silence

Like the first time in the night

Do you understand the meaning

I said, No… but I know Christ

Nevertheless

I know He loves His children

Nevertheless

I know mercy wears a face

And though I cannot tell

How all these stories end

I have seen enough of Heaven

To follow Him again

Then the world grew still around me

And the light began to rise

Every question lost its thunder

In the wonder of His eyes

Not a king upon a throne room

Not a warrior crowned above

Just a child sent down among us

Teaching Heaven how to love

Nevertheless

I know He loves His children

Nevertheless

The Holy One came down

And I may not know

The meaning of all things

But I know the God of Israel

Walks beside the weak

Nevertheless

I will follow Him
