Lyrics

Upon a hill where the sunlight fell

I chose the finest ground

I cleared the stones with patient hands

And turned the earth around

I planted vines of the choicest kind

Built a tower strong and high

Carved a press within the rock

And watched the seasons pass me by

The rain came down

The sun arose

Everything needed

For life to grow

I gave you rain

I gave you sun

I gave you shelter from the storm

I gave you roots

A place to belong

A vineyard safe and warm

Sweet fruit was the promise

Yet wild grapes were grown

O vineyard of my love

Why will you not come home

The branches climbed

The leaves grew green

The hillside looked alive

But when the harvest season came

No good fruit could I find

The sweetness I had waited for

Was nowhere on the vine

The gifts I gave were all received

Yet none were turned divine

The walls stood firm

The watchman stayed

Still the vineyard wandered

From the path I’d made

I gave you rain

I gave you sun

I gave you shelter from the storm

I gave you roots

A place to belong

A vineyard safe and warm

Sweet fruit was the promise

Yet wild grapes were grown

O vineyard of my love

Why will you not come home

House upon house

Field upon field

Never enough to satisfy

Darkness named light

Pride dressed as wisdom

Truth pushed quietly aside

The hungry cried

The judges slept

The mighty bought their way

And still the vineyard wondered why

The harvest slipped away

What more could I have given

What more could I have done

I gave you living water

The moon and stars and sun

I built the tower

I marked the rows

My care was fully shown

O vineyard of my love

Why will you not come home

The hill remains

The gate stands wide

The Keeper still is waiting

The vines can live

The roots run deep

The Keeper still is waiting

Come home…

Come home…

Come home…
